The family of Ralph Barbero, 93, one of our "Greatest Generation", has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present at his funeral services to honor him, we would be honored to do so.

Ralph Barbero enlisted in the US Navy in September, 1942 and served as a Radioman 2nd Class until his honorable discharge on April 17, 1946.  He served aboard the USS Hamlin (AV-15) a seaplane tender, which was in the battles of Guam, Saipan, Eniwetok, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.  He witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.  He was wounded in battle breaking both arms, 108 pieces of shrapnel in him also breaking his teeth.  His father was notified he was missing in action and did not know he was alive until after he returned from the war.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries.

Ralph was an expert self employed cabinet maker and woods craftsman for 65 years.  He made bookshelves and entertainment centers and cradles for his children.  He was an excellent fisherman and an avid deer, elk, pheasant, dove, and quail hunter getting his first buck at age 15. For many years he went on an annual fishing trip with his sons and other family to Mammoth.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, 12 years ago.  He leaves his three children, Terri Funk (spouse Steve), Ken Barbero (spouse Martha), Mike Barbero (spouse Alma), 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with #4 arriving in June.
