The Patriot Guard has been invited by the family of MCPO Lowell "Bud" Cothern to attend his services.  We are privileged to attend.

Ret. MCPO Lowell Thomas “Bud” Cothern, a 26 year veteran of the U.S. Navy, passed away on September 3, 2013.  Prior to retiring from the U.S. Navy Bud served as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Equipment (ABE) Master Chief.  This position provided type commander direction for the Pacific Fleet Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE) Quality Assurance Program with specific responsibility for monitoring and scheduling the replacement of flight/hangar deck nonskid coating on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.  Bud served from July 1971 to July 1994.

Awards:  Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon (2 awards), good Conduct Medal (5 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (3 awards), Kuwait Liberation Medal (3 awards), Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (5 awards), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Kuwait Campaign Medal, Expert Pistol Shot Medal.

After retiring from his career in the U.S. Navy, Bud worked as a Consulting Field Engineer for AMSECLLC, and Gryphon Technologies from 1999 to present. In this position, he monitored, scheduled, and evaluated the replacement of nonskid on flight deck and hangar decks of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.

Hobbies: Grandmaster of Kuntaw Legacy Filipino Martial Arts, “The Filipino Art of Hand and Foot Fighting,” with a 9th degree black belt; classic cars and motorcycles. Member of El Cajon Harley Davidson HOG Chapter since 2002.

Family Survivors:  Mother, Artie Janice Stapleton; Sister, Leslie Cothern;  spouse, Graciela Flores; Biological Children, Jeffrey Cothern, Bud Cothern and Samantha Cothern;  stepchildren: Ishmael Meza, Daniel Meza and Lewis Meza; and 3 grandchildren.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all are welcome, we will be accompanying the hero and his family from the services at Glen Abbey Mortuary to his final resting place. Please see the time table if you would like to participate. For those who would rather go directly to the cemetery, we will meet you there.

You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. Everyone is welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car. If this will be your first mission go to the initial staging area and you will be briefed there by the R/C (Ride Captain).  Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car).  Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can.  Please ride/drive safely.
