The family of Officer Richard Nilos, has invited the PGR to be present to honor this hero for his service to his country. both domestic as an LEO and globally as a Marine,  It will be our privilege to do so.

Officer Richard Nilos was an 11-year veteran of the Fountain Valley Police Department, having been hired by the Department while attending the Police Academy at Palomar College.  Sadly Officer Nilos passed away at home from what appears to be natural causes.

Ricky was a recipient of many accolades for his tenure as Motor Officer assigned to the Traffic Bureau and was a certified Motorcycle Training Officer.  He received over 40 commendations from Traffic Court referees, victims of crime or vehicle collisions, and even people he issued tickets to!  He was a recipient of the Department’s Medal of Valor for his actions during a gun battle against a deranged gunman armed with an assault rifle in 2010.  He was also twice the recipient of the Department’s Medal for Lifesaving.  Ricky was a member of the Department Color Guard, the West County SWAT Crisis Negotiation Team and the Department’s Peer Support Team.

Prior to his law enforcement service, Ricky served as a United States Marine Infantryman and was among the first to enter and liberate Iraq under fire in 2003 as part of the First Marine Division.  He served from February, 2000 until May 31, 2008 when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sgt.

Ricky's favorite pastimes included spending time with his wife and children, first and foremost, and loved the holidays with them.  He loved waiting for Christmas day with the kids when he would be just as excited as  they were.  Ricky also loved football and golf.

Ricky is survived by his wife; Becky Nilos, Children; Richard, Nathan and Cody Nilos, Father; Richard Nilos, Mother; Debbie Kosum and Sisters; Katrina Marie Martin, Kandace Nilos and Nicole Boyer, and many extended family and friends and his law enforcement family.
