The family of James Gilbert Prather has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to participate in the services of their loved one.  We will be honored to do so.

James Prather served in Vietnam from 11/66-11/68.  While in country he served with the USMC 3rd Division, HQ 9th Marines during the Tet Offensive.  While in country he received a Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Medal as well as other commendations and awards.  After active duty he was transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves until his discharge in Aug 1970.

While on active duty he was exposed to Agent Orange which resulted in severe complications to a variety of medical issues including COPD and MDS, a blood cancer and led to his death.

After the military he worked for Firestone Tires, National Can Corp., was an ironworker, Westinghouse Elevator technician, a LA City building inspector and several entrepreneurial adventures.  He founded the Masonic Families Helping Veterans Chapter 01, MFHV.  He was actively involved with Veteran’s Rights and needs for other veterans, not himself.  He was a lifetime member of AMVET and VVA.  James was awarded the Hiram Award (second highest award in the Masons) for his work helping veteran’s causes.  He created the “Honor Veterans Commitment” flag that has flown inside the Halls of Congress.

He loved pets and animals, body building, taking walks and going to movies.  He also had a passion for “fun” cars such as the Lotus.

James is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sheryl, daughters Keri, Erin and Megan, 2 grandsons and 2 half-brothers Robert and Danny Prather.
