The family of Gilbert (Gib) Benson has requested participation by the Patriot Guard Riders as they lay their father to rest at Riverside National Cemetery. We are pleased and honored to participate.

Gilbert was born in February of 1921. He grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa where he married his childhood sweetheart, Rosemary in 1940. They would stay together as husband and wife for 71 years!

He joined the US Navy in 1944, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. Kingsbury in Iwo Jima, among other assignments, until the war’s end in 1945, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Seaman 1st Class.

Gilbert worked for a local Marshalltown company after the war and would eventually move to Duarte CA to work as a machinist while raising his family. Upon retirement, he moved to Ontario CA. He was an avid competitive golfer, loved singing and “fixing” anything that required problem solving skills.

Gilbert is survived and will be missed by his children Janet, Pat, Larry, and Ron. Gilbert also leaves twelve grandchildren, twenty six great grand children and four great, great grandchildren.

We have a slight twist to this mission. Gilbert’s wife of 71 years, Rosemary passed in December of 2011. Her cremated remains will be entombed together with Gilbert's.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran
