The family of Michael Mitchell has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country.   It will be our privilege to do so.

Michael, 74 years old, served his country in the US Army from April, 1965 to April, 1968. Michael served in the 101st. Air Borne and then became a Green Beret. Michael served in Vietnam as a member of a force recon unit with the Green Beret.

Michael received the following medals, Purple Heart, Army commendation medal, Vietnam campaign medal, National defense medal, Combat infantryman’s medal.

After the Army Michael went to work for SDG&E as a mechanic and retired as the head mechanic for the company. He also worked for the workers union representing his fellow workers.

Michael was survived by his son Allan Mitchell, granddaughter Haden Mitchell, sister Frances and Robert Mclean (a Marine) of La Mesa, Ca., sister Patty and Allen Forbes of Boise, Idaho.

Michael was well known for his love for antique vehicles and as a member of several car clubs in the area. He won many trophies at many different car shows. If Michael loved anything more than his old cars it was his granddaughter Haden. He spent as much time as he could with her.  I have to mention the other great love of Mike's life which was his beloved dog, Austin, who had just passed. Mike also loved all the trips he took on cruise ships around the world.

A special note, before passing Michael requested to be escorted by the Patriot Guard. His sister told me that was his last and final request was to be escorted by the Patriot Guard and that was his only request. We will be there to honor this American hero.

The family has requested an accompaniment from Erickson-Anderson Mortuary to Miramar National cemetery.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all are welcome, we will be accompanying the hero and his family from the church service to his final resting place. Please see the time table if you would like to participate. For those who would rather go directly to the cemetery, we will meet you there.
