We have been invited by the family of August “Gus” Suszko, 93, to attend the Military Honors of their loved one. It will be our privilege to fulfill their request.
Gus served in the USN from 10/31/50-12/13/54. During his service Gus was a Hospital Corpsman Third Class serving with a Marine Infantry Company during the Korean War. On July 26, 1953, he earned a Purple Heart and was awarded a Silver Star during action against enemy aggressors, for "outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty." While serving with a company operating forward of the main line resistance Gus was critically wounded, unable to walk, he crawled to a wounded officer to provide first aid. Gus directed safe evacuations of several comrades, before being evacuated himself. All while under both “intense enemy mortar and artillery fire.
After the Navy Gus worked as a Civil Engineer for Caltrans for 37 years. His work included structural design for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, administering and supervising many highway and bridge projects in Southern California, and teaching various construction courses.
In his spare time Gus enjoyed woodworking, fishing, public speaking and camping and travelling with his family. In later years he enjoyed cruising with his wife, learning to cook and spending time with his dog, Kaylee.
NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, all PGR members are welcome. This Mission will be an accompaniment from the Poway – Bernardo Mortuary to Miramar National Cemetery, approx.17 miles. Please see the timetable if you would like to participate. For those who would rather go directly to the cemetery, we will meet you there.

You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. All PGR members are welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car. If this is your first mission, go to the initial staging area, and you will be briefed by the R/C (Ride Captain). Dress for motorcycle riding or wear casual attire while driving a cage (car). Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can. Please ride/drive safely.
Remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent with honor and respect for our Heroes—no talking, smoking, or cell phone use during the flag line or service. Please keep radios off and engine noise to a minimum. Show respect to all who are there, not just the ones we honor.
