Anton "Tony" Hackbarth, 79, USAF, Barstow - 31 MAY 14

The family of Anton “Tony” Hackbarth, 79, has invited the Patriot Guard Riders in a flag line mission honoring their beloved family member. It will be our honor to do so.

Tony Hackbarth was affectionately known as “Mr. Del Taco” as it was he and his brother Ed that created the now famous chain of Mexican fast food restaurants. Ed was the actual founder of the first Del Taco in Yermo. It was then reopened in Barstow on First Ave. Tony primarily worked from this location well into his 70’s, often alongside his daughter,,,   ulie Hackbarth-McIntyre who is the present mayor of Barstow.

Del Taco grew to over 250 locations. The family sold the franchise in 1979 but kept the 3 restaurants in Barstow. The menu and recipes from the Barstow Del Taco’s are different than the corporate’s and on a personal note, the food is much better tasting in Barstow than out. Judge for yourself following the mission.

Tony served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of A/1C assigned as a Supply Specialist and Air Reserve for six years 1954-1960. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal.

Services for our hero will be at 11:00 Saturday, May 31, at the First Baptist Church, 1320 S. Barstow Rd. in Barstow. This will be a flag line for the family and possibly the urn as they enter the church. As this will be a very large crowd of maybe 500, I would suggest entering the parking lot at the upper or second entrance at 10-10:15 or earlier. You will see my Can Am Spyder with the big flag near the driveway. Should you enter the lower entrance please drive around the buildings and allow handicap, elderly, and family members to use the lower parking lot.

Please remember you are on church grounds honoring one of Barstow’s esteemed citizens. Loud noises and use of profanity are highly discouraged. Thank you.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. Please see the time table if you would like to participate.

You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. Everyone is welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car. If this will be your first mission go to the initial staging area and you will be briefed there by the R/C (Ride Captain).  Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car).  Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can.  Please ride/drive safely.

Please remember to post your condolences for the family at this link:
