The Volunteers of America and the family of  Masayoshi Yamashiro invites the Patriot Guard Riders to participate in their loved one’s funeral services. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Masayoshi Yamashiro was born 12 SEP 27 in Brawley, CA.  In September 1950, Masayoshi was standing in line at the Army recruiting center and was told by the recruiter he was to short (5'1") and underweight to enlist.  Masayoshi pleaded with the recruiter to give him a chance to prove himself. On 29 SEP 50, at the age of 23 years old, Masayoshi enlisted in the Army.  On 11 JAN 52, Masayoshi was assigned to Headquarters Company, 160th Infantry Division and deployed to Korea as an auto mechanic until his honorable discharge, 20 AUG 52.

In 2016 the Volunteers of America (VOA) discovered that Masayoshi was homeless and living with his dog, Otis, in his van for the past 13 years.  The VOA provided motel housing for him until he received permanent housing from a Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VOSH) voucher in September 2016.
Sadly, Masayoshi Yamashiro passed away on 17 SEP 19.

After Masayoshi’s passing the Los Angeles County Administrator’s Office located his only living son, Daniel Yamashiro.  Daniel had looked for his dad for 20 years, but because his dad was homeless never located him.

Masayoshi loved surf fishing and going to the Dollar Store, buying toothpicks, gluing them together making miniature structures and giving them away as gifts.

Masayoshi was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine, and daughter, Heather. He is survived by his son, Daniel.

Note:  This notice is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this military veteran.  For those interested all are welcome.
