The family of SGT Daniel R. Lewis and the US Army have invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present as their Hero returns to his home state of California and for his funeral services.

Daniel “Sonny” Lewis, 23, was born on September 12, 1997, in Lakewood, California; he passed away on Monday, August 9, 2021, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

In 2014, Danny graduated from Heartland Christian Academy in Bethel, MO.  He attended Long Beach Community College and was a member of the track team.

Sonny was serving with the US Army at the time of his passing. He was assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a Supply Sergeant. 

In 2017,  Danny joined the Army as a Supply Specialist with the goal of becoming a Green Beret.  He deployed to Afghanistan in 2020. Danny was promoted to the rank of SGT on 01AUG2021. SGT Lewis’s military education includes Basic Airborne Course, Basic Leaders Course, Special Operations Foreign and Non-Standard Armourer’s Course, and the Field Sanitation Team Course.  His military awards include the Army Achievement Medal with Combat Device, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, Chilean Parachutist Badge, and Expert Rifleman Badge. 

Daniel is survived by his wife, Shakeema Lewis of Fort Bragg, NC; maternal mother, Audrey Reed Wright and step-father, Roger Wright of Albuquerque, NM, paternal father, Chester Pottorff of Willimington, CA; adopted mother, Tracy Lewis of Lakewood, CA; brothers, Joshua Lewis of Twenty Nine Palms, CA; Andrew Lewis of Los Angeles, CA, James Lewis of Lakewood, CA; sister, Katie Lewis of Lakewood, CA ; half-sisters, Sashelle and Leimomi Pottorff of PA; maternal grandfather, Howard Reed of Enola, PA; maternal grandmother, Katie White of Harrisburg, PA; paternal grandmother, Francis Wong of Honolulu, HI; grandmother, Diane Shea of Green Bay, WI; grandfather, Jim Shea of Avada, CO; and step-father.

Sonny was a hard worker and was respected by all who worked with him.  He enjoyed basketball, music and eating out with friends.  His joyful spirit and laughter will be greatly missed.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this American Hero. For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, we will be accompanying the Hero and his family from the airport to the funeral home, approx 14 miles. Please see the time table if you would like to participate. If you prefer to meet the procession at the funeral home please feel free to do so.

This mission involves an aircraft arrival. Arrival times can change at the last minute so please check this thread for any last minute changes before leaving.

You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. All PGR members are welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car. If this will be your first mission go to the initial staging area and you will be briefed there by the R/C (Ride Captain).  Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car).  Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can.  Please ride/drive safely.
