The family and the US Marine Corps have invited the Patriot Guard Riders to accompany their Hero, 1stLt Hugh C. McDowell, 24 yrs of age, as he is transported to the airport for his journey home to Washington, DC, we are honored to do so.

1stLt Hugh C. McDowell, or Conor as he was known to friends and family, was commissioned on May 5, 2017, and was the Platoon Commander for 1st LAR Battalion at Camp Pendleton, he was killed in an accident on base in a vehicle rollover.  He was receipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Conor McDowell was born in Washington, DC and attended local schools, graduating from St John's College High School.  He went on to attend The Citadel College majoring in history before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps.

McDowell was fascinated with military service, adventure and history since the age of 8, his mother said, recalling how she read passages from ‘The Odyssey’ at bedtime when he was a child. “His eyes would light up,” Flanigan said. “You could see that’s what he wanted.” McDowell was also inspired by stories of his grandfather, who fought with British forces in North Africa and Europe during World War II.  “He was a warrior,” his father said, adding that McDowell stood against bullying and prejudice from a young age.

Conor McDowell is survived by his father Michael H.C. McDowell, his mother Susan Flanigan, and his fiancee Kathleen Bourque.  He was an only child.
