The family of Master Sergeant Edwin Bernard Coyl has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country.  It will be our privilege to do so.

Edwin Coyl served in the United states Air Force from 1959 to 1985, including three tours in Thailand. Edwin was an Air Policeman his first 8 years of service including Kadena AFB, Okinawa. He also served three tours in Thailand between 1971-1975. Edwin was exposed to herbicide agents and currently has a claim pending for Parkinson’s disease. Edwin was in the USMC Reserves for 4 years before enlisting in the USAF. Edwin was then in the USAF for 26 years. He served 14 years overseas duty, and he had a top security clearance.

Edwin was in President John F. Kennedy’s Honor Guard. Edwin (Ted) escorted the President to the plane to Dallas in 1963, escorted the casket off the plane when it was returned to Andrews AFB, stood the death watch at the Capital, and escorted the caisson to Arlington National Cemetery. After the funeral he was given any duty station he wanted and he chose Okinawa. Edwin served in Germany for several tours and was a member of the US Military Baseball team which won the European Championship.

After retiring from the USAF in 1985, Edwin was immediately recruited by General Dynamics and was moved from Tucson, AZ to San Diego by GD where he worked in the Missile Supply Support Group for over 10 years. After retiring from GD, he worked for several years at Anacomp in Poway, CA before retiring permanently.

Edwin and Alice loved to cruise and visited over 76 countries. They competed taking pictures and published numerous coffee table books of their travels and adventures. No matter where in the world he visited, Edwin made friends. They still keep in contact with several in Australia and Europe. Edwin had many hobbies that included travel, photography, cycling, golf, computer games. Edwin collected eagle statues, coins, shot glasses, beer steins, and stamps from all over the world.

Edwin was a sentimental man who loved his family and his country. He would get tears in his eyes when Taps was blown or the National Anthem was played. He would always stand at attention when the US Flag was displayed.

Edwin is survived by his wife Alice, son Edwin the 3rd, daughter Deborah and preceded in death by his daughter Dawn Victoria Coyl. (11/1969 – 08/2021). He also had two grandsons and a granddaughter.
