The family of Dirck Hartmann Sr. has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to honor their hero for his service and sacrifice to his country. We are honored to do so.

Dirck honorably served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1941 to 1944. He was a P38 pilot in the 80th fighter squadron in the South Pacific Theatre.  He saw much action, was credited with three confirmed kills, and barely survived when his P38 crashed due to engine failure during takeoff while the airfield was under attack. Dirck was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries.  His rank at discharge was 1st Lieutenant.

Following his distinguished military service Dirck graduated from Cal Tech and became an Aerospace Engineer, working on the Apollo programs that put a man on the moon. His work in these programs included work with distinguished scientist Werner Von Braun. During his work in the space programs Dirck was issued some twenty patents. He was a devoted family man, loved swimming, hiking, sailing and other such activities. He also loved motorcycles and rode for many years. Dirck was a true patriot who dearly loved his country.

Dirck was preceded in death by his wife Anna in 2013.  He is survived by three children, Dirck Jr., Karen and Robert; and three grandchildren.
