The family of GySgt Brian Eric Poe has invited the Patriot Guard to help honor their hero at his services Friday, 11 October 2013, and we are honored to do so.

GySgt Brian Eric Poe's too brief a life began in 1966 in Twin Falls, Idaho and ended after a valiant battle with a rare form of cancer on 5 October of this year.

In between those dates, Eric lived a full life revolving around music and service to others.  His natural talent playing the French Horn got him elected as his High School Drum Major three times.  When he joined the USMC, Eric became a member of the Marine Corp Band and was assigned to the Pacific Band at Peral Harbor, New Orleans and back to Hawaii before heading to Quanico to be part of the Marine Shooting Team and Combat Marksmanship Instructor.  There he met his sweetheart, Mala.

Eric competed both nationally and internationally, including a trip to Turkey with the CISM, or the Military Olympics. Some of Eric's records still stand.

Eric and Mala returned to San Diego when Eric was assigned to the Marine Corp Recruiting Depot, and were married in 2004.

During his career, Eric was awarded the following medals and citations:

Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (7th Awd), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Awd), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation  Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Awd), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation  (3rd Awd), Letter of Commendation , Letter of Appreciation  (41st Awd) , Certificate of Commendation (Unit Awd), Certificate of Commendation (Individual Awd), Rifle Expert Badge (2nd Awd)

Upon retirement in 2006, Eric, inspired by Mala's expertise and passion for the deaf community, became the Director of Operations for Deaf Community Services, learned to sign, and became a good friend of SoCal's deaf community.

In 2009, Eric was diagnosed with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) - a rare form of cancer.  Unfortunately this was one obstacle that Eric was unable to overcome.

Eric is survived by his wife, Mala; Mother, Jo (Leonard) Reedo; father, Ray (Tannya) Poe; brother, Alan (Dujuana) Poe; half-sisters, Jennifer Ferguson and Diana (Jason) Rich; step-sister Deena (Doug) Warne; step-brother, John (Felicia) Mills; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
