!!! UPDATE !!! ADDITIONAL INFO/STAGING BELOW !!!The family of George Edward Kanyuck Jr., 74 has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to accompany their loved one part way to his final resting place and it will be our honor to do so.
George served in the United States Marine Corp from May 24th 1966 to May 28th 1968. George was a LCpl at his time of honorable discharge. George served in the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, 128 Marines deployed with his unit, he was 1 of only 3 who made it home. His Purple Heart was for a shrapnel injury and he was angry they gave it to him when he felt it was so insignificant compared to what happened to his brothers. In addition to the Purple Heart, George was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Medal and the Expert Rifle Badge.
George worked in the jewelry business after his military service. He started in the retail side and eventually moved into the wholesale side designing jewelry display cases. George liked to say that he created the "fizzle that sold the sizzle". George also enjoyed gardening, the beach, body surfing and playing the guitar.
George is survived by his two sisters, Joanie and Christine, and many nieces and nephews.
The PGR has been asked to accompany George from the mortuary to the north end of Camp Pendleton at the Cristianitos Rd overpass. (We will not be traveling on base) This is a distance of approx 21 miles.
NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, we will be accompanying the Hero from the mortuary on a partial journey to his final resting place. !!! ADDITIONAL INFO BELOW !!!It has been brought to our attention that this mission that is happening today on Saturday is only being accompanied half way to their destination.
He is being brought up from Oceanside to San Clemente where the group from San Diego is going to peel off because of the long distance to Rose Hills.
This was at Family's request because they felt it would be hard on the riders. So we are going to try and help pick up the ball and go the rest of the way.
We have already alerted the Mortuary and the Family is being notified. Lets make a really bad day a bit better for the Family.
Our Hero will only have 2 PGR that we know of coming the rest of the way with him to Whittier.
They have been told their will be no Pall Bearers, and no other accompaniment coming with him. No one will be meeting him at Rose Hills.
We can't let this Hero travel alone. So here is what we are proposing. We will have two groups, you choose which group you will stand with. It is your choice.
