The family of Kirby McMillan Jr. has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to our country. It will be our privilege to do so.
Kirby McMillan Jr. served for 20 years in the US Navy from 1974-1994 and retired as a First Class Petty Officer. He was a submariner and a recruiter. He earned the National Defense Service Medal w/Bronze Star, Southwest Asia Service medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon; Navy Battle "E" ribbon (3x); Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars; Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon w/Bronze Star; Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon; Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon w/3 Bronze Stars; Navy Expeditionary Medal; and the Kuwait Liberation Medal
Kirby led an interesting life to say the least. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York where he was a local track star. He joined the Navy right after graduation and upon completion of his Mess Specialist training was assigned to the U.S. Navy’s most decorated vessel ever, the USS Parche (SSN-683). This submarine spent several years performing the clandestine tapping of a Soviet underseas communication cable in the Sea of Okhotsk. The Parche also took part in cable detection and tapping operations near the North Pole and in the Barents Sea and was never detected! The USS Parche would win a staggering number of honors, including ten Presidential Unit Citations, nine Navy Unit Citations, and thirteen Expeditionary awards.
After retiring from service, Kirby became a reality specialist and worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Kirby volunteered at The Red Cross and took part in the relief efforts after the devastation left behind by Hurricane Ida. He always remained healthy by long distance running and bicycling. Kirby was a cheerful man, a track coach, husband, and father. He is survived by his wife Michele (army veteran) and three children: Demetrius, David, and daughter Zantea.
NOTE: You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. All PGR members are welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car. If this will be your first mission go to the initial staging area and you will be briefed there, by the Ride Captain (RC). Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car). Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can. Please ride/drive safely.
Remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent with honor and respect for our Heroes—no talking, smoking, or cell phone use during the flag line or service. Please keep phones off and engine noise to a minimum. Show respect to all who are there, not just the ones we honor.
