The United States Marines and the family of LCPL Anden Matthew Valliere-Pedro have asked the Patriot Guard to be with them as they say their good-byes to their son and hero. We are honored to join them.
Anden Matthew Valliere-Pedro, also known as “Anden Bird”, lived a short but extraordinary life. He was a shining light to all who met him – funny, smart, compassionate, determined, strong and always the hardest worker. Once he made up his mind to do something, he stubbornly stuck to it until it was done. This applied to his school work, which he excelled in, his athletic performance on the football field in high school, and his work outside of school. Most importantly, his fierce dedication to becoming a Marine developed early, around five years old. He successfully completed the Young Marines program, which only solidified his dream to become a proud Marine as an adult.
As a tween and young adult, he worked very hard to achieve his goals - nothing came easily for him - but he did it all with good humor and a contagious smile. To say everyone loved him is no exaggeration. He was adored by his large extended family, and particularly by his mother Audrey and sister Raegan. His hugs were legendary – huge, warm and genuine. His football teammates at Schurr High School called him “Sunshine.” He was already an admired and respected leader as a Lance Corporal in the Marines within months of completing boot camp.
It seems unimaginable that we are mourning his loss after celebrating his high school graduation less than 18 months ago. Then, he was excited and happy about leaving for Marine boot camp, and gladly shared his plans and dreams for a Marine career.
Anden was a beloved son, grandson and great-grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend to so many loved ones. As a young adult, he was always so sweet, thoughtful, and caring with his family. He was always willing to play with younger cousins and his sister and let them hang on him when they wrestled. During visits, his entire family tried to show they loved and appreciated him, and how proud they all were of him. His painful loss and powerful, loving presence will be felt every day and we miss him very much already.
Anden is survived by his mother Audrey Pico and stepmother Kaci Pico; father Ricky Bird and stepmother Kim Bird; sister Raegan Bird; grandparents Mary Ellen and David Valliere; Jeanne and Jeff Bird; Bernadette and Anthony Lara; Linda and Steven Kettle; as well as his extended family, which include the Pedro, Valliere, Pico, Bird, Caruso, Lopez and Levine families.
