A veteran of the Vietnam and the Gulf Wars, he retired at the rank of Master Chief Hospital Corpsman (HMCM). While serving on the USS Valley Forge, he was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Medal for heroism, saving a shipmate from taking his own life. Master Chief Bejarano was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/Star, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (2), the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (2), the Navy & Marine Corps Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon (2), the South West Asia Service Medal (2), and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
Master Chief Bejarano had a strong sense of loyalty to his county, comrades, and friends He was thought of by many to be a wise man, and a good listener with a big heart, always having the time to help others and guide those in need. After his service, Robert was a nurse.
During Master Chief Bejarano’s service in the Gulf War, he became best friends with Kris Kiltz. Upon their return from the Gulf, Robert became very close with Kris’ family. As Robert had no immediate family, Kris’ family welcomed Robert into their family and considered him an adopted family member.
Robert’s adoptive family has requested accompaniment from the Interstate 5 Aliso Creek Rest Area to Miramar National Cemetery, a distance of approximately 33 miles.
