The family of Francis Jane Winfrey has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor this World War II heroine for her service to this country.  It will be our privilege to do so.

Jane Winfrey, 95, was born on 14 November, 1923 and passed away 31 July, 2018.

Jane proudly served this country in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 15 June, 1944 until honorably discharged on 29 October, 1945.   She had earned the rank of Seaman, First Class at the time of discharge.

Jane was born in Wichita, Kansas but spent most of her young life in Illinois before answering the call of duty in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. During her service she was stationed in Long Beach, California where she met her future husband, Ralph Burney. They were married 21 April, 1945. The women of the Coast Guard Reserves were called "SPARS". Commodore J. A. Hirschfield, USCG, observed that the SPARS asked no favors and no privileges. They did their jobs with enthusiasm, with efficiency, and a minimum of fanfare. Jane was one of the few brave women who adhered to that observation. She often said Ralph liked to call her his "spare".

After her service, Jane worked in a factory before becoming a full-time homemaker and raising three sons. Jane's passion was golf. She could be seen several times a week on the golf course when she wasn't running her restaurant in Syder, Texas. Eventually Jane and her family settled in Long Beach, before moving to Hemet, California.

Jane leaves behind three sons; Charles, Ralph and David, three daughters-in-laws; Pamela, Jackie and Maureen, one grandson, Sean, and two granddaughters, Lauren and Marissa.
