He served in the United States Air Force from August 30,1967 to June 1, 1971.  He was trained as a Data Processing Machine Operator and later as a Supervisor.  Robert was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base and served 2 years in Japan, his rank at the time of his honorable discharge was as a Staff Sergeant. Among his awards were the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

After the Military, Robert went back to school, and received his bachelors degree in biology from UC Riverside. He began an 11-year career as an EKG technician at Riverside Community Hospital. While there, he earned his teaching credential from UCR and began his teaching career at JW North High School, where he taught science for 28 years.
