The family of William J. Schmitt has asked the Patriot Guard Riders to pay Honors to their loved one. It will be our privilege to do so.

William joined the United States Army on 11 September 1942 and served until his Honorable Discharge on the 20th of October 1945. At the time of William's Discharge he was a tech 5 specialist. During his time of service William was stationed in Germany with  Co A, 48th Combat Engineers. William also carried the rating badge of Automotive Mechanic 014.

William  was stationed in Europe for 3 yrs serving in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, & Central Europe. The unit William was with was assigned to build bridges at night under enemy fire. Most of William's unit did not make it back home.

William was very humble and like most veterans he would say "He was just doing what had to be done at that time for Our Country".

After William's Honorable Discharge from the Army, William worked with the 20 Mule Team in Boran, Ca. mining underground for borax.
He later went to work for the City of Ontario, Ca. with public works, where he became Crew leader for the Street Department.
William worked with them for 26 yrs of dedicated service before retirement.

William passed away Sunday before Memorial Day, William's wife passed 29 yrs ago and he is survived by his 2 daughters, Susan Cabrera, Cheryl Somerville, 5 grandchildren  and 11 great grandchildren.
