The family of Lon Parker Oakes has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country. It will be our privilege to do so.
Lon joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963 as an enlisted man and later went to OCS. Lon served three tours in Vietnam, 1970, 1971, and 1973. He also served as a Series Commander of 1st Battalion at MCRD. Lon’s awards/citations included the Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He rose to the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1973.
Lon succumbed to Agent Orange-related illness.
After Lon left the Marine Corps he went to work at Rockwell International Space Division. He worked on the shuttle program.
Lon is survived by his son Sean Oakes, his three sons and daughter Shelley Oakes Beatty and her four sons.
