The family of Robert Lee Callaway has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country.  It will be our privilege to do so.

Bob was born at St. John’s Hospital in Iola, Kansas, on 29 November 1942.  He graduated from Iola High School in 1960.

Bob served proudly in the U.S. Navy for twenty-two years, achieving the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bob served multiple deployments in the Vietnam War and worldwide. Kevin (son) served thirty-three years in the U.S. Navy, and Kylon (grandson) is currently serving in the U.S. Navy. Bob was proud to be the second of four generations of Callaways serving the U.S. Navy spanning eighty plus years.

In 1966, Bob purchased his first motorcycle and loved riding it across the country with his wife, Eileen. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs, NASCAR (specifically Clint Boyer), Western movies, oatmeal cookies, and dogs.

Bob was an active member of the American Legion, VFW, Fleet Reserve, Gold Wing Road Riders, CA1F, and Patriot Guard Riders. He served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-two years and established his own business, Callaway Trucking, until his retirement.

Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Eileen, son Kevin Callaway and wife Lisa of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and daughter Robin Smith and husband, Danny of San Diego. He also leaves behind grandchildren Kara Callaway-Murden and husband Travis, Kylon Callaway, Samantha Smith, and Tanner Smith, two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Kinsley Murden.

Bob was preceded in death by Roy and Ola Callaway (parents) and Jim Callaway, Betty Sutterby, and Dale Callaway (siblings).

The family is requesting an accompaniment from the family residence to the cemetery.

NOTE: This mission posting facilitates your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, we will be accompanying our hero and his family from the family home to his final resting place. Please see the timetable if you would like to participate. We will meet you there for those who would rather go directly to the cemetery.

We encourage those who do not ride to participate in your car. If this is your first mission, go to the initial staging area, where you will be briefed by the R/C (Ride Captain). Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car). Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can. Please ride/drive safely.

Remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent with honor and respect for our Heroes—no talking, smoking, or cell phone use during the flag line or service. Please keep radios off and engine noise to a minimum. Remember, cemeteries are hallowed ground. Show respect to all who are there, not just the ones we honor.
