The family of Captain Walter B. Shulte has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the Military Honors of one of the Greatest Generation Heroes as he makes his final journey. It will be our honor to do so.
Walter, a member of our "Greatest Generation," proudly served in the U.S. Army Air-Corps from 1943 to 1947. He joined the Army-Air Corp during WWII at age 19 and flew as a Navigator on B-17s with the 385th Bomb Group out of Great Ashland Air Field in England. On 6 October 1944, his plane was shot down over Berlin. He was captured, interrogated and ultimately sent to Stalag I at Barth on the Baltic. While he was a POW, he contracted a serious case of pneumonia and was hospitalized at the prison camp. On May 7, 1945, the Russians marched through and liberated the camp while he was still in the hospital. He was returned to the USA and sent to Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver for surgery to remove part of his very damaged lung. He was retired because of his lung disability in 1947. He passed away from complications of his damaged lung.
After the military, Walter graduated from USC with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, worked as an engineer in aerospace and medical equipment for Northrop, Hughes, and Theim Industries before starting his own sheet metal fabrication company. He retired at 55 to devote his time to remodeling old houses with his wife and best friend, Norma Schulte. They were married for 74 1/2 years before Norma passed on September 6, 2021 at the age of 100. Walt loved to travel, especially to annual reunions of his 385th Bomb Group and he loved being around his family. He is survived by his son, Walter B. Schulte, Jr. and his daughter, Mary Ann (Schulte) Shields, 5 grandchildren and five grandchildren.
NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, we will be accompanying the Hero and his family from the mortuary to his final resting place, approx. 63 miles. Please see the timetable if you would like to participate. For those who would instead go directly to the cemetery, we will meet you there.

You do not have to be a Veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission. All PGR members are welcome. We encourage those who do not ride to participate in your car. If this is your first mission, go to the initial staging area, and you will be briefed by the R/C (Ride Captain). Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car). Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can. Please ride/drive safely.
Remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent with honor and respect for our Heroes—no talking, smoking, or cell phone use during the flag line or service. Please keep radios off and engine noise to a minimum. Remember, cemeteries are hallowed ground. Show respect to all who are there, not just the ones we are honoring.
