The family of US Army Chaplain LTC Lawrence “Larry” Haworth has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service. It will be our privilege to do so.
LTC Haworth initially served in the USAF for about 2 years, before being commissioned into the US Army as a Chaplain. Chaplain Larry volunteered for two tours in Vietnam and six years along the East German border. LTC Haworth earned a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and 5 Meritorious Service Awards, plus many other awards. His first Vietnam tour was in the Mekong Delta with combat aviation at Soc Trang during the Tet Offensive, 1968. His second tour was with the 11th Armored Cavalry (Blackhorse) along QL13 usually near Cambodia.
After 27 years of active service, Larry retired and started serving as the National Chaplain for the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia (11th ACVVC) and for "Reveille", the official publication of Point Man Ministries. He served for about 20 years until he could no longer travel. In addition, Larry wrote a book, a summary of his Point Man Ministries articles, "Thunder Run: The Convoys, the noise, the ambushes...stories of QL13, the Route 66 of Viet Nam" (ACW Press, 2004).
Larry passed away of natural causes in August 2022, while a resident of the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, TX. He will be buried with his wife, Deanna, who passed in January 2022.
LTC Haworth is survived by his sister, Janice Green and several nieces and nephews.
