The family of Charles Henry Sturtevant has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country.   It will be our privilege to do so.

Chuck enlisted in the US Army the day after he graduated from high school. Chuck served from January 6th, 1951, to December 27, 1952.  After boot camp, he was deployed to Korea where he served as a member of the Military Police. After Chuck was honorably discharged, he enrolled in San Diego State University (SDSU) where he majored in Mathematics and Geology.

In his Junior year at SDSU, Chuck met the love of his life, Peggy Malone, in Balboa Park. Their wedding on November 22, 1956, began a marriage of 66 years that was blessed with seven children and five grandchildren.

After graduation from SDSU, Chuck was employed as a Systems Analyst at Navel Electronics Laboratory (NEL) in Point Loma. While at NEL, Chuck became an expert in anti-submarine warfare. His work took him to places around the world including Hawaii, Washington DC, Japan, and Italy. In 1978, he was appointed to the position of Science Advisor to the Third Fleet and the family relocated to Hawaii for 2 years. Several years later, Chuck directed the Anti-submarine Warfare Department at the Pentagon where he was affectionately known as “Pops”. Chuck retired in June 1993 after 37 years of service.

Outside of work, Chuck took an active role in his children’s education and served on many committees at Holy Family Church and School. Chuck loved the beach and desert and enjoyed sharing his love of nature with his family. He was also a sought-after Little League coach.

After Chuck retired, he became a docent for the Mission San Diego where he took great pleasure sharing his knowledge of San Diego history with all visitors, especially elementary school children. In his free time, Chuck enjoyed reading, puzzle games, listening to folk/country music, classical music and walking.

Chuck passed away on September 6, 2022, at the age of 91 due to complications related to Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; children Joseph (Clare), Eileen, Mary (Ed), James (Randie), Patricia (Art), John and Katie; and grandchildren Samantha, Andrew, Matthew, Christopher and Charlie. Chuck is preceded in death by his sister Helen Sturtevant Chadwick. At Chuck’s request, his body was donated to Alzheimer’s research.
