The family of Charles Fimbres has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to be present to honor their hero for his service to his country.  It will be our privilege to do so.

“Corky” served proudly in the US Navy During WWII

While Corky was still attending Calexico High School he enlisted in the Navy.  He was very patriotic and felt he owed it to his country to leave school and help with the war effort.  He joined the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Kennebago (AO-81) “The Mighty Mo”.  He was involved with the invasion of Okinawa and the liberation the Philippine Islands.  The Mighty Mo was part of the U.S. Naval fleet in Japan under the command of Admiral Nimitz.

After his discharge from the Navy Corky returned to Calexico.  He married Margaret Tamayo in 1948.  They were married for 24 years and had 5 children.

Corky was a Renaissance man.  His employment history included: A&P Market employee, milkman for Quality Dairy.  He also managed Burger Boy, Roberto’s Restaurant, Rosie’s Café and a mobile home park.  He also worked for Kmart, Imperial Hardware, Pizza Hut and was a greeter at the Calexico Walmart Store.

In High School Corky was considered as one of the great athletes in the Imperial Valley.  He was the quarterback on his High School team and was awarded League Champ twice, 1943 & 1944 All Valley Football and Base Ball.  In 2006 he was inducted into Imperial Valley High School Football hall of Fame.  He was considered one of the greatest players back in the day.  He continued playing in alumni games and coaching in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Corky was very committed to promoting youth sports by coaching the youth who participated in Pony League.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and listening to country western music.

Corky is survived by his children; Norma Lizarraga, Charles (Judy) Fimbres, Lynda (Juan) Orduna, Judy (Richard) Bird and Gabriel Fimbres, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Note:  Corky was divorced and remarried when he passed away and was living in Mexicali, Mexico.  His family in the States was not notified at the time.  The family has no death certificate or place of interment.  The death certificate is required for the Navy to provide Military Honors.   The family is requesting the Patriot Guard to honor him for his service to our country.  We are honored to provide this for a great WWII Patriot.

Note: The PGR will provide Taps and the Folding of the Flag.  The VFW will provide their Honor Unit for the Rife Volley.

NOTE: This mission posting facilitates your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran. For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, we will be honoring our hero at the Calexico Park, right next to the Memorial Wall for Calexico veterans.

I WILL BE IN MY VEHICLE AND HAVE ROOM FOR 3 MORE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED.
