It is with great sadness that we announce we have lost one of our own, Brian Zane, 73, PGR Ride Captain.  We have been invited by the family to attend his Celebration of Life and it will be our honor to fulfill the family’s request.

Brian Arthur Zane was born April 4, 1951 in San Bernardino, CA and passed away on May 12, 2024.

After graduation from high school, Brian began his career with the Santa Fe Railroad in San Bernardino, moving to the Barstow Hump Yard in 1975 and retiring in 2011.

Brian was a member of Barstow Sheriff's Search and Rescue for many years.  He coined the term SAR City when he transferred their annual training to Sawtooth Canyon for more hands-on training.  He borrowed MASH tents to serve as classrooms.  Brian also joined the Red Cross and organized citywide disaster drills in the early eighties.  He became an EMT 2 prior to paramedic services coming to Barstow.

Although Brian did not serve in the military, he showed honor and respect to fallen heroes and first responders by supporting family members during a very difficult time - joining the Patriot Guard Riders and becoming a Ride Captain.  He would ride his red Spyder for the PGR missions.  He was a charter member of Spyder Ryder of America and past President of the Inland Empire chapter.

Brian was a member of First Baptist Church in Barstow for many years where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and actor/singer in their annual Christmas Alive.

Brian's hobbies were his Spyder community, traveling and family karaoke.

Brian is survived by his wife Joy of 53 years; his children Shanda Barela (Pete), Scott Zane (Dora), Elizabeth Ribera (Daniel); and 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by three brothers, Randy, Dennis, and Kerry.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this Military Veteran.  For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, this is a flag line only mission at the church.  For those who would like to participate, please see the timetable and we will meet you there.
