Loch Crane, USAAC/USAF WWII, San Diego - 14 MAR 2016

Loch Crane was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps and the US Air Force.   He was a flight instructor and architect for the USAF and USMC for decades in retirement.

When news came that Pearl Harbor had been bombed, Loch signed up for the US Army Air Corps.  He would eventually fly B-25s in World War II.  He stayed in Japan through 1946 teaching “twin-engine advanced” pilots and overseeing some construction efforts as a Major – Director of Installations.

Loch Crane was an accomplished architect who apprenticed under Frank Lloyd Wright.  He designed a House Beautiful prize winner with a Committee of 70 women.  It has never been repeated.  During the 1980s he used a Cessna to fly to job sites around the States, notably houses and a church in Nebraska.  He developed houses on a hexagonal rather than a square floor plan; He used this for commercial, religious, residential, and civic buildings.  His San Diego adoption center had 3 entrances to separate parents, adoptees, and kids; another multi hexagon serves the USMC training center for recruits and their services.  After retirement he continued to donate his time to a Mexican charity building basic housing for the poor.

Loch designed yachts as well as houses, and sailed to Hawaii by sextant, making a direct landing using the 18th century navigational instrument.  His only heir is longtime PGR member Loch David Crane, local retired college professor and poet and builder of the Star Trike.

We have been asked to accompany this hero to his final resting place at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.    It will be our privilege to do so.
