The family and friends of Melvin Woodward have invited the Patriot Guard Riders to honor their hero for his service and sacrifice to his country. We are honored to do so.
Mel served on board the USS Tamalpais in the Asiatic-Pacific and American Areas in WW II, and he was on the USS Tamalpais in Tokyo Bay during the surrender of Japan. He received several ribbons and medals including the Victory Medal for World War II.
Following his military service Mel served a full career as a Fullerton police officer, retiring as a lieutenant; then along with wife Georgia they worked part time for the National Park Service. Mel enjoyed sports, especially his beloved Dodgers, and coached American Legion Baseball.
He is survived by his wife Georgia, children Nancy, Gary, Lauren and Mark and their spouses, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
