The family of Stephen Lynn Simon, 78, has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the military honors of their loved one as he is laid to rest.  It will be our honor to attend.

Stephen “Steve” served in the United States Marine Corps from 1965-1968.  He served boots-on-the-ground in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart.  He also received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 star, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Navy Unit Citation, and Letter of Commendation.  Steve was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal (E-4).

Steve attended college at Cal Poly Pomona to study architecture.  He was a very talented woodworker and owned his own cabinet-building and remodeling business for 50 years, building custom cabinets and furniture.  There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do or build.

Anyone who knew Steve knew how he loved to have fun and made sure everyone around him was having a good time too. He loved a good card game with his cousins, something handed down from previous generations, and a wild game of “bump,” making many bump boards for the family.

He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, being born and raised in Iowa.  The Washington Redskins were his favorite football team.  He enjoyed all sports, golf, and NASCAR.

Steve is preceded in death by his wife Susan (Sam) Simon in 2011 and his son, David in 2023.  He is survived by his pride and joy grandson, Zachary, and sisters Bette McCann, Janiece (Denny) Anderson, and Rick (Shellee) Simon, sister-in-law, Jorene Simpon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and close friends.

NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring this military veteran.  For those interested, and all PGR members are welcome, this is a flag line only (FLO) mission at the cemetery.  For those who would like to participate, please see the timetable and we will meet you there.

"Standing For Those Who Stood For Us

Only two defining forces offered to die for you:
Jesus Christ, and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other one died for your freedom.

You do not have to be a veteran or a motorcycle rider to attend this mission.  All PGR members are welcome.  We encourage those who do not ride to attend in your car.  If this will be your first mission go to the initial staging area and you will be briefed there by the Ride Captain (RC).  Dress for motorcycle riding or dress casually if you are driving a cage (car).  Please feel free to attend any portion of this mission you can.  Please ride/drive safely.

Please remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent, and with honor and respect for our Heroes.  No talking, smoking, or cell phone use during the flag line or service.  Please keep radios off and engine noise to a minimum. Observe the 15 MPH speed limit.  Remember, cemeteries are hallowed ground.  Show respect to all who are there, not just the ones we are honoring.
