The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8070 out of Azusa has asked the Patriot Guard Riders accompany them from the Veterans Hospital to the post for the Annual Jim Rose Disabled Thanksgiving Dinner. We are honored to fulfill their request.
Jim Rose was a WWII veteran honored for a lifetime of service in Azusa. He helped the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8070 move to the current location on First Street, then served as the post’s commander for several years. IN 1971, he brought 50 disabled veterans from the Long Beach VA hospital to Azusa for a full Thanksgiving dinner. In 2012, the Post changed the name of the annual event to the Jim Rose Disabled Veterans Thanksgiving Dinner and fed more than 150 disabled veterans from three local hospitals.
Rose was lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He served in the Pacific theatre after being drafted in 1942, earning a Purple Heart in 1945 during a firefight in Okinawa, Japan. It was that time spent in recovery that spurred Rose’s tireless efforts to host the annual Thanksgiving treat for the veterans.
